Unidentified bike-borne assailants allegedly opened fire at a lawyer in North-East Delhi’s Dayalpur area on Thursday while he was driving to court, the police said.

According to a police officer, the lawyer, identified as Shrikant, 30, sustained injuries but managed to stay conscious and drove himself to his house in the Jauhari Pur area. The lawyer’s family alerted the police at Karawal Nagar station at 8.30 am, while some neighbours took him to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

“He was immediately taken to GTB Hospital for treatment. He is being attended by doctors and, reportedly, his condition is stable,” Ashish Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North East, said.

The police said the assailants fired at least 10 to 12 rounds of bullets at Srikant while he was going to the Karkadoooma court in his grey Hyundai i10 car through a narrow lane near Nala Road.

Video footage showed that three to four shots were fired at the front of the car, as the assailants were coming from the opposite direction, the police said. Bullet holes on the driver’s side of the car’s windshield are visible. Another couple of rounds were then allegedly fired as the assailants passed by the vehicle, leaving the rear side glass window shattered.

The police are now looking at the CCTV footage and trying to ascertain the motive behind the incident.

“A case under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Arms Act has been registered at Karawal Nagar police station. Teams from Karawal Nagar and the operations unit of NE District have been deployed to identify and effect the arrest of the accused persons involved in this crime. Investigation is underway,” DCP Mishra said.
