With the arrest of four persons, the Delhi Police claims to have cracked a gang that used to fly to Mumbai to commit chain snatchings.

Siddhant Verma (28),the gang leader,Shailender Singh (28),Sheetal Chawla (27) and the receiver of stolen chains Sagar Jadhav (23) were arrested from near the Laxmi Nagar Metro station on Saturday.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (West),Sharad Aggarwal, said: “Verma and Singh went to Mumbai by air, committed the crime and returned by train.”

Both are fond of driving motorcycles, the DCP said. Residents of posh colonies, their monthly expenditure was about Rs 70,000 each.

According to Aggarwal,Verma said during interrogation that he belongs to a jeweller’s family. He got into crime after he took over the business from his father and made losses due to his lavish lifestyle. Verma was arrested in 2007 and after a jail term, shifted base from Delhi to Ghaziabad.

“As their earnings increased, they shifted to a upscale colony in Ghaziabad, paying a rent of Rs 15,000-18,000 per month,” Aggarwal said.

Verma is also said to have a second wife in Ghaziabad. “With an increased requirement of money, they began committing snatchings more often,” the DCP said. On an average, they used to snatch three chains a day.
