Strengthening and modernising the capital’s transportation infrastructure will be part of the AAP government’s infrastructure push this fiscal, sources aware of developments in this regard said on the day that the Delhi Legislative Assembly’s budget session commenced.

Over 1,500 zero emission e-buses will be inducted in the next year, making Delhi’s e-bus fleet largest in the country; the issue of last-mile connectivity, according to sources, will also sought to be solved through a dedicated initiative, the “Mohalla Bus” scheme, which will be launched next year.

“Delhi’s public transport infrastructure to be modernised at par with global standards with the development of multiple ISBTs with airport like amenities, multi-level bus depots and bus terminals,” a source said.

Infrastructure projects in the city are supposed to receive the biggest outlay for capital expenditure as compared to the last eight years of the AAP government in this year’s budget after health and education having figured as the main priority for the AAP government in every budget since it came to power in the year 2015.

While the outlay for education was 23% of the total budget, it was around 15% for health last year. This time around, however, in addition to focusing on the city’s public transportation sector, upgrading and beautifying the 1,400-km-long road network of Delhi are the priorities. The budget is scheduled to be presented on March 21, Tuesday.

In the 2022-23 budget, close to Rs. 2,000 crore was allocated for construction of roads and bridges. Delhi’s budget was Rs 75,800 crore last year and is expected to be around an estimated Rs. 74,000 crore this time around.
