In Delhi, architect says molested by group of men on way home

Police said they have received the description of the accused from the woman and are verifying details.

A 39-year-old woman architect has alleged she was molested and assaulted by six men at an upscale colony in South Delhi Sunday. The woman has told police that she was on her way home when the men stopped her car and attacked her. Police said they have registered a case and are investigating the matter to identify the men.

“I was returning home from my office around 7 pm when five-six men stood in front of the car when I was five minutes away. I rolled down the window and asked them to move aside. All of a sudden, one of them rushed towards me and groped me. I was shocked and couldn’t understand what had happened. Another man joined him and molested me. When I tried to resist, they punched me on my face and pulled my hair. One of them tried to take my phone but luckily the phone fell inside the car. I started the car and sped… When I reached my house, I saw one of them outside, but he ran away on seeing me,” she told The Indian Express.

The woman said she is usually accompanied by a driver but it was his day off.

Police said they have received the description of the accused from the woman and are verifying details.

The woman further alleged that after the incident, she tried calling 100 and 112 but couldn’t get through. “After I couldn’t get through to the police, my neighbour helped me and we filed a complaint later at night at the police station,” the woman, a mother of two, said.

Police said there were no witnesses and they are trying to recover CCTV footage from the street.

Atul Kumar Thakur, DCP (South), said, “We have registered a case against the accused on charges of voluntarily causing hurt, theft, wrongful restraint and using criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. Officers are probing the matter and the accused will be arrested.”

The woman also claimed that 15 days before the incident, she had complained to a beat constable about a group of men who were allegedly “drunk and roaming around in the colony”.
