Two Bangladeshi women were arrested from the Mandavli area for residing in India illegally for the past four years, the Delhi police said. According to the police, the two women, Atifa, 24, and Asma, 24, from Dhaka, entered India in 2021 through West Bengal.

They then allegedly went to Kolkata, where they hopped onto a train to Banglore. They allegedly came to Mahipalpur in Delhi, from where they moved to Laxminagar and have been living in the Mandawali area for the past year, a police officer privy to the investigation said.

“They have been residing in various localities without valid documents or permits. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the individuals and networks involved in facilitating their illegal entry and stay in India. Additionally, legal action is being initiated under the provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946, as well as the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the illegal Bangladeshis,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania said.

Since the launch of the drive against rooting out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in November 2024, nine people have been arrested for residing in India illegally in the East Delhi district. Just two days ago, the Delhi police said they had apprehended six more alleged illegal immigrants in Jahangirpui who made a living out of posing as transgender people.

In February, soon after the BJP government in the capital took charge, Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting, with Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and CM Rekha Gupta in attendance, where he called for strict action against networks facilitating Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants into the country.
