IB students lose out due to late results

The Delhi University folded its application process for admission today, leaving a set of students perplexed and apprehensive.

The Delhi University folded its application process for admission today, leaving a set of students perplexed and apprehensive. These are the students who have passed Class XII from the International Baccalaureate (IB),but are still awaiting results.

A reputed international board,IB will declare its Class XII results only on July 6. Now,the students have no option but to apply to the DU under ‘Result Awaited’ section.

To add to the woes of the students,by the time IB declares results, most reputed colleges would have closed admission for their popular courses, leaving students out of the race. Unfortunately, the ‘Predicted Result’ provided by IB,which is usually very close to the final result of students,is not accepted by DU.

“My son has a predicted result of 92 per cent, but DU refuses to take that into account. And by the time the actual results come, good colleges as well as courses would be hard to find,” said G S Bhatia, whose son Sahej has approached nearly all DU officials, along with friends who are facing similar problem.

“This is lack of coordination will ruin the future of our children,” Bhatia rued.

Shreya Aggarwal, student of a Dubai-based school, has 94 per cent in her predicted results, but she sees her dream of studying in SRCC slipping away. “I don’t know what is my fault,if my school board is not declaring the result to match the DU timetable,” she questioned.

The DU authorities, meanwhile, are blaming IB. “It is practically impossible for us to stall or defer our admission process for individual boards. We repeatedly request all the boards to declare their results in time for the students to get a fair chance,” said Deputy Dean Students Welfare,G S Tuteja.

Tuteja also rejects the suggestion of accepting the predicted results. “How can we acknowledge (them) when the board itself does not recognise it as the actual result?” he said.

According to Tuteja,IB should pre-pone the declaration of result, and for that to happen,he feels, the pressure would have to come from the schools following the IB curriculum. But till then, access to DU for IB students would remain a hurdle.
