He stole cars to provide for his girlfriends: Police

A resident of Bakkarwala village in Nangloi,he was given the surname ‘Bakkarwala’ by his associates and is accused of stealing more than 300 vehicles. According to police records,he began his crime career in 1998 after joining hands with one Makhan,also an auto-lifter. He was released on bail after nine months,but was arrested again by Delhi Police in 2003. He was rearrested in 2005 and 2007,but escaped from the custody of Gurgaon police in May 2008. He was arrested again the next year.

Arun Kampani,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said on June 20,2011,Bakkarwala escaped from police custody with the help of one Praveen,who he had met in the jail,and his girlfriend Tina.

“Praveen and Tina befriended the policemen at Saket court and offered them a lift to Bhondsi Jail. While on the way,the duo stopped their car at Sushant Lok and offered the policemen food at a roadside eatery. Praveen handed the car keys to the policeman and took them to the eatery,leaving Tina and Bakkarwala in the car. Tina had the duplicate keys of the car and helped him escape,” said a senior police officer.

In October last year,police had chased and surrounded Bakkarwala’s i20 car near Delhi Secretariat at ITO. But,the auto-lifter escaped after crashing into police gypsy. A Delhi Police sub-inspector was injured.

“It is interesting that a man like Bakkarwala,who is involved in so many cases,does not have a case of murder against him. Since he runs an organised crime racket,it is possible that we may book him under MCOCA. This is the only way to contain a criminal like Bakkarwala,” said an officer.

During his earlier interrogations,Bakkarwala has confessed to stealing cars early morning or late in the night. “That is the time when cars are being cleaned. He threatens the car cleaners and then makes away with the cars,” said Kampani.
