The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed a plea by the Shri Dharmik Ramlila Committee,which organises the Ramlila at Red Fort,to close a multilevel underground parking lot run by the municipal corporation for the duration of the festival.
The celebrations are scheduled to start from Saturday. The committee had filed the plea claiming that the move would help avoid traffic snarls and disturbance to the Ramlila.
The special bench of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Muralidhar said the committee did not have any vested legal right to demand closure of a parking lot.
If traffic and security issue is so serious,why dont you consider shifting the venue for the Ramlila to another place, the court told the committees counsel Sudhir Nandrajog.
Nandrajog also argued that President Pranab Mukherjee would be the chief guest at the Ramlila and his security protocol demanded that the parking be closed.
Let the parking be closed for the two days when the security is required. How can you ask to close it for 10 days? the court said.
The special bench,which was hearing the issue of traffic and Chandni Chowk redevelopment,has asked the civic body and traffic police to work out traffic management.
