Sixty-Seven hawkers will return to Nehru Place to sell their wares exactly a year after the DDA used brutal force to remove them in time for beautification of the premises.

The hawkers were part of a pilot project initiated along with the DDA in July 28,2003 for regulated,controlled and systematic hawking in Nehru Place,a well-known commercial centre in South Delhi.

Justice A P Shah and Justice Sanjiv Khanna observed that DDA was acting illegally in suddenly swooping down on the hawkers,forcibly removing them and confiscating the articles on April 19,2008.

The court said,There was no need for such haste and hurry on part of DDA. The sellers have lost their livelihood and have been deprived of their meagre earnings. The court directed the land agency to permit the 67 hawkers to return to the area and set up shop again.

However,the court left it to the DDA whether Nehru Place should be declared a no-vending zone in future.
