Two boys drowned in the Haiderpur Canal in Northwest Delhi on Sunday evening while out for a swim, police said.

According to police, the boys, Aniket (9) and Krishan Kumar (13), lived in a jhuggi cluster near the Ayurvedic Hospital in Shalimar Bagh. Their fathers had gone to work on Sunday afternoon, and the two children decided to go for a swim around 4 pm. The boys were unable to get out due to the strong water current and drowned,” a police officer said.

Police said their fathers returned home and couldn’t find the children. They looked everywhere for them. “They eventually called the police after hours of searching. The police team, with the help of two locals, found the bodies in the canal,” said the officer.

“A PCR call regarding the incident was received at 10.17 pm. The boys were shifted to BJRM Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival,” DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh said.

Aniket, police said, is survived by his two elder brothers and father. Krishan is survived by his father and three siblings — an elder brother, a younger brother and sister. Both children lost their mothers at a young age, police said.
