On the eve of Independence Day, residents of Gurgaon woke up to a familiar monsoon sight — waterlogged roads and traffic snarls.

Thursday’s rain began around 4.30 am, paused briefly around 9.15 am, and continued till around 2 pm. The district saw 44 mm of rain till 8 am, as per data shared by the district administration. From 8 am till 5 pm, the city saw 15-27 mm of rain across its tehsils.

Several neighbourhoods were underwater by 9 am: Palam Vihar, Ashok Vihar Phase 3, E-Block in Sushant Lok 1, and Sector 23A saw moderate to heavy waterlogging.

The area around Sikanderpur Rapid Metro Station along Golf Course Road was also affected.

“It is a very bad situation. The main roads and even the parks are inundated,” said Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, Sector 23 Residents’ Development and Welfare Association general secretary.

“There’s a health crisis now, as garbage from open plots is floating around,” he said, adding that it poses a risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases.

He added that most houses in the area have been without electricity since 9 am, after a large tree branch fell on power cables.

The road outside Artemis Hospital in Sector 52 was also affected.

“Bhagwan ka naam lete hue vapis aayi hu (Came back by taking God’s name along the way),” Ardee City RWA member Chaitali Mandhotra said on returning home after travelling through that stretch in the morning.

On its part, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said all efforts are being made to clear the water.

Officials said gullies (surface water channels) along all main roads are being cleaned and additional pump sets deployed.

In a post on its X handle, the body said, “Stormwater is receding swiftly from master roads with GMDA’s on-ground action. Teams are working to clear all blockages from road gullies and drain openings.”

It added that the stormwater in the Sector 44 master road had been cleared by 3.20 pm.

In the evening, a GMDA spokesperson acknowledged that the early morning rainfall had posed waterlogging challenges in several areas.

A spokesperson from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) said, “… As soon as the rain began, MCG’s engineering… teams promptly reached waterlogging-prone areas, utilising pumps and other machinery to drain water from roads, lanes, and public spaces. Simultaneously, sanitation teams ensured no lapses in clearing garbage and debris alongside drainage operations.”

Further, sanitation workers were clearing trash from Garbage Vulnerable Points and major roads to ensure drainage routes are clear and water flows unobstructed throughout the day.

“MCG’s call centre operators continuously relayed waterlogging complaints from various areas to the respective field teams. Additionally, grievances received via social media platforms were addressed promptly,” the spokesperson added.

MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya emphasised that the priority is to minimise inconvenience to residents. “The collaborative workstyle of the engineering and sanitation teams set a commendable example today. Monitoring continues at all potential waterlogging sites during the rainy season, with additional resources deployed as needed to ensure Gurugram residents remain free from waterlogging and garbage issues,” he said. A traffic police spokesperson said, “Despite waterlogging at locations such as Mata Mandir, Genpact Chowk, Tulip Chowk, Malibu Towne, Badshahpur Bus Stand, IMT Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Signature Tower, near Narsinghpur FOB, Rajiv Chowk, near Rampura Flyover, Hailey Mandi, and Sector 37, our officers, including inspectors and zonal officers, braved the rain to manage the situation. They assisted in pushing and safely relocating approximately 8-10 vehicles stuck in waterlogged areas to secure locations, ensuring smooth traffic flow.”

At MG Road, near Metro pillar 114, a tree fell on the road but was promptly moved to the side by Zonal Officer Ashok Kumar with the help of passersby, the spokesperson added.
