A lower court in Gurugram on Thursday convicted three men in a robbery case – the district’s first conviction secured under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as the new criminal code of India.
The three men – Ramesh, Gangaram alias Sunny, and K Selvaraj – posed as police officers and targeted unsuspecting travellers, said the Gurugram Police.
“They would target individuals who were by themselves on the road and offer them a ride. They would then play recorded messages on their phones, claiming to be checking in on other civilians, while robbing the passengers of their belongings,” said a police spokesperson.
The incident leading to their arrest occurred on the intervening night of October 11 and 12, last year. The accused offered a ride to a person standing on the highway near Manesar. The police said the man agreed to go with them. After traveling a short distance, the accused brandished a knife, took away his purse and then fled.
A team led by Sub-Inspector Lalit Kumar arrested the three men on October 12 and recovered the car, knife, and stolen items, which included cash worth Rs 7,000, police said. During questioning, the accused revealed that they had committed around 50 such crimes across the National Capital Region.
Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Chauhan sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on each of the accused. “’The 10-year sentence is immensely satisfying given the nature of the case. These accused would target poor labourers and steal their hard-earned money,” Kumar told The Indian Express.
