A 33-year-old man was arrested from Assam for allegedly using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to morph a woman’s photographs into obscene images and videos, creating a fake Instagram account in her name, and posting the material on various social media platforms, police said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Niloy Banik, was apprehended on November 20 from Guwahati by a team from the Gurugram Cyber Crime (East) police station. According to the police, Banik is a repeat offender as he has been arrested previously for harassing the same victim in a similar manner.
He was produced before a court in Guwahati and was taken on transit remand. On Sunday, he was taken to judicial custody by a Gurgaon court.
The matter came to light after the complainant approached the Gurgaon Cyber Crime (East) police station on September 12, stating that an unknown person had created a fake Instagram account in her name and was posting morphed obscene photos and videos.
Further, the complaint added that the morphed photos and videos were also being shared across other social media platforms, causing the complainant humiliation.
“During questioning, Banik admitted that he knew the victim. He downloaded her photographs from her social media accounts, used AI tools to morph them into nude/obscene images and videos. He also created a fake Instagram profile in her name, and uploaded the material”, a police spokesperson said.
According to the police, a probe into the case revealed that Banik had earlier harassed the same woman in a similar manner, leading to his arrest in a previous case. He was then granted bail by the Guwahati High Court but allegedly repeated the offence, police said.
“One mobile phone used in the crime was recovered from his possession. The case is still under investigation”, officials said. In a similar case, last month, a 19-year-old man had allegedly died by suicide in Faridabad after he was blackmailed with morphed photos and videos of him and his sisters.
In that case, police had said that the youth had consumed a poisonous substance at his home and died. An FIR for abetment to suicide had been filed based on a complaint by his father at Old Faridabad police station.
The father had alleged that before his death, his son admitted that a man had been blackmailing him for two weeks by sending obscene and morphed photos and videos of him and his sisters on WhatsApp. The complaint claimed that the accused demanded money, causing his son significant distress and leading to his decision to end his life.
