“We have received inputs that many fraudsters are behind this scam and more arrests are likely,” Kumar said.

Last October the victim Kala Ram, a labourer at a Manesar company, received a call from a prospective rentee who identified himself as an Army officer and fixed an initial payment.

Taking advantage of Kala Ram’s ignorance in e-payment, the person asked him to enter his UPI Pin to make a payment of Rs 44,000 in his account.

“He posed as an Army officer and the former resident was also one, so I was convinced. When they requested money, without thinking twice, I clicked on the Paytm link and sent the money,” recalled Kala Rama.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered in December 2022.

During interrogation, it was revealed that their accomplices defrauded the complainant of Rs 44,000 from his bank account by falsely claiming to rent a house. Out of the embezzled amount, Vishnu opened an account and transferred Rs 28,000 to it using the documents obtained from another individual, the police said.

Inspector Naresh Kumar said that it was found that Vishnu, who works as a supervisor in a company, facilitated the opening of a bank account for the labourers working under him. He obtained documents from these workers and used them to open the bank account, the officer said.

“Vishnu sent Rs 20,000 to Rahul, who in turn, sent Rs 35,000 to another account. So far, eight such bank accounts were formed,” the officer said.
