A software engineer allegedly strangled his wife to death before dying by suicide in their rented apartment at a housing complex in Gurgaon’s Sector 37D Sunday, the police said.
The bodies of Ajay Kumar, 33, and Sweety Sharma, 28, also a tech professional, were discovered after a friend from Bengaluru alerted the authorities upon receiving a video message from Kumar confessing to the murder and his intention to end his life, officers said.
Kumar was originally from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh where his father works as an electrician. Sharma hailed from Asansol in West Bengal where her father runs a furniture business. The two had been in a relationship for several years before getting married in 2023.
The couple, who lived in Tower-7 of Millennia-1 society, were found in a room which was locked from the inside. Sharma’s body was on the floor with ligature marks on the neck, indicating that she was strangulated, the police stated.
No suicide note was recovered, officers said, but Kumar’s mobile phone and other devices have been seized for forensic examination, including analysis of deleted data, chat histories, and call records, an officer added.
The incident came to light around 4 pm on Sunday when Kumar sent a video to a WhatsApp group of friends in which he confessed to killing his wife, apologised to those affected, and spoke about his plan to die by suicide. He also expressed regret over unfulfilled hopes of building a happy family with children.
One of the recipients, a friend based in Bengaluru, immediately informed Kumar’s relatives, who in turn contacted Sharma’s family in Delhi and alerted the police. Soon after, officers from the Sector 37 police station broke open the door of the apartment and found the bodies.
The last known communication from the couple was around noon on Sunday, when Sharma spoke to her mother. Her phone was later switched off.
According to the police, the couple had no children and neighbours said they kept to themselves, with no reports of audible quarrels.
Officers recorded statements from both families, who said they were unaware of any marital discord. An autopsy is awaited to confirm the causes of death, and all angles are being probed, the police said, adding that a First Information Report (FIR) will be registered after a formal complaint from Sharma’s family.
