Vipin Bhati (30), accused of setting his wife Nikki (26) on fire along with his family members last week at their Greater Noida home for dowry, was planning to go on a vacation without his wife, her family told police on Monday.

In their statement to police, Nikki’s family members also alleged that he was involved with another woman and his decision to go on a holiday leaving Nikki behind led to an argument on August 21, the day she died.

The fight escalated and other members of Vipin’s family got involved, assaulted the 26-year-old woman and burnt her to death, police said Nikki’s family has alleged. The police said they are investigating the allegations. Nikki’s post mortem report says she suffered 80% burns in the incident, Dharmendra Shukla, Station House Officer, Kasna, said.

Vipin, his parents Daya and Satveer and brother Rohit are accused in the case and all four have been arrested, Sudheer Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, said.

While Vipin and his mother, Daya, were arrested over the weekend, his father Satveer and brother Rohit were arrested on Monday. “The mother-in-law was arrested on Sunday evening near the GIMS Hospital, the father-in-law and brother-in-law were arrested from Sirsa village. The probe has begun and evidence is being collected,” said the ADCP.

Nikki and her sister Kanchan were married on the same day in 2016 to brothers Vipin and Rohit. “We got to know only after Kanchan called me to inform me that Nikki had been burnt,” recalled Rohit Payla (30), Nikki’s brother. An argument broke out, he said, over his brother-in-law wanting to go somewhere for vacation, leaving Nikki behind. “He was going to meet a woman.. They got into an argument and we don’t know what happened later that led to her death,” he said.Rohit also said that he had spoken to his family about Vipin’s actions.

“Every time my sister complained, her in-laws told her that he would change and she needed to adapt. The conflict between the couple was also the reason that the beauty parlour that both the sisters ran from the first floor of their home was shut by Vipin and his brother,” Rohit told the police.

Nikki’s father had visited her and her in-laws at their Sirsa home last week, he added.

Meanwhile, Shukla said the initial probe confirmed that the couple had not been talking for two weeks before her death. “The couple had been staying under the same roof but had stopped talking to each other. It was a domestic argument, which later escalated,” Shukla said.

“The probe is ongoing, we have taken all the evidence into consideration,” said the SHO.

On Monday, the wails could still be heard in Nikki’s house in Roopwas village in Greater Noida in the absence of Nikki’s mother and sister, who, the family said, were admitted to a private hospital after their blood pressure dropped due to grief and shock.

Sanjeev Kumar, 51, Nikki’s cousin, a farmer, said that they initially assumed that it was a domestic fight.

Har ghar mein ladayi hoti hai, koi thodi na police complaint karne lag jata hai. Parivarik log hain hum… humne socha tha aapas mein suljha lenge (Fights happen in every house. No one goes to file a police complaint. We are family-oriented people. We had thought that we would resolve the issue among us),” he said.

After purported clips showed Nikki falling down the stairs when she was set on fire, a fresh CCTV footage emerged on social media that showed Vipin carrying his wife and heading to the Fortis Hospital. The seven minute video showed Vipin running back and forth to the hospital and later taking her in a white car. Devendra Bhati, Vipin’s cousin, who also rushed her to the hospital, according to his mother ,was detained by police on Saturday for questioning, and released on Monday morning. Devendra Bhati runs a stationary shop nearly 100 metres away from Satveer’s shop.

“It was evening. There was a lot of rush in the market. We were inside our house when we heard people scream. Vipin was running here and there and then we saw them carrying her to the hospital and my son went along with them,” Devender’s mother said.
