Gangster Goldy Brar has been booked for allegedly threatening a Ghaziabad-based businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs 5 crore via WhatsApp calls, police said on Thursday.
According to the police, an FIR has been registered against Brar, who was formerly associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, under Section 308(2) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case came to light after a man identified as Devendra Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad’s Niwari area, filed a complaint, police said.
In his complaint, Kumar alleged that on October 18, he received a WhatsApp call and the caller issued a death threat and demanded Rs 5 crore, officers said.
According to the police, Kumar in his complaint also alleged that he received another call from a different number on Wednesday. Police said that Kumar claimed that during the second call, the caller identified himself as “Goldy Brar from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang” and again demanded Rs 5 crore.
“On the same day, around 12:19 am, I received a message which read, ‘Diwali mana le, uske baad goli aayegi, (Rs) 5 crore taiyar rakh’ (Celebrate Diwali, after that you will be shot, keep Rs 5 crore ready),” Kumar told the police.
“Following the FIR, we began tracking the caller’s location, which was traced to France. To gain better clarity on the location, we will seek assistance from Meta and other intelligence sources,” said Jaypal Singh Rawat, Station House Officer (SHO) of Niwari.
Kumar was previously a trader.
