Ghaziabad Traffic Police Saturday started a campaign to remove extra seats installed in auto-rickshaws to accomodate more passengers than its capacity, and issued more than 1,000 challans in two days.

Officials said extra seats in auto-rickshaws can cause accidents. “It was often seen in Ghaziabad that auto drivers were overloading autos by installing extra seats and allowing passengers more than its capacity. It is against the rules and in violation of the conditions of the permit. Due to this (extra seating), the driver finds it difficult to control the auto, which increases the possibility of accidents. As a result, the driver and passenger’s life are in danger,” said Ramanand Kushwaha, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Ghaziabad.

He further said, “In order to reduce the incidence of accidents in Ghaziabad, the traffic police is running a campaign in the city and rural areas from July 1 to remove the extra seats… So far, they have been removed from 1,063 autos and action has been taken by issuing challans against them. The fine for this is Rs 5,000. Auto drivers have also been instructed not to repeat this in future.”

Kushwaha said that this campaign will continue till the extra seats are removed from all autos.
