Days after a Domino’s pizza delivery agent was choked and robbed at gunpoint in the Pul Prahladpur area of Southeast Delhi, the police arrested the main accused in the case, who is part of the Gala Ghontu gang, after a brief exchange of fire on Saturday night.
The Gala Ghontu gang squeezes their victims’ necks while robbing them. The gang started its activities in Northwest Delhi, but similar robberies are now reported from across the capital, with others copying the modus operandi.
According to the police, Himanshu and one of his accomplices, Kaushal, robbed the delivery agent on October 22, the video of which was doing the rounds on social media. The video showed that the delivery agent was crossing a lane when a black Royal Enfield motorcycle overtook and forced his scooter to stop. Himanshu, who was riding pillion and wearing an orange T-shirt, got off the motorcycle and forced the delivery agent off his two-wheeler.
As they talked, the driver of the motorcycle, wearing a black and white shirt, came from behind and grabbed the delivery agent by his neck, wrapping his arms around the victim. Himanshu then robbed the delivery agent. The robbers soon fled the spot, even as the Domino’s agent chased them on foot haplessly.
After the video went viral on social media and the Delhi Police commissioner took note of the incident, the station house officer of the Pul Prahladpur police was sent back to his cadre as a punishment.
The police said in a statement that the special task force (STF) of Southeast Delhi received a tip-off about the movement of Himanshu near the Badarpur flyover on Saturday night.
“Members of the STF and the local police reached the flyover and laid a trap. Himanshu was seen coming on a bike and asked to stop. Seeing the police, he took his gun and fired. The police fired back, with a bullet hitting his leg. The accused has been arrested,” a police officer said.
