Four of five suspects are married, have kids: Police

Four of the five suspects in the Dhaula Kuan gangrape case are from Dhauj village in Faridabad district, the police claimed on Saturday.

Four of the five suspects in the Dhaula Kuan gangrape case are from Dhauj village in Faridabad district, the police claimed on Saturday.

Though police officers said they were all 25 years old,the kin of the four accused claimed that none of them are above 23 years. All four are married, and have children.

The fifth,Usman alias Kale, lives at Mirpur in Mewat district’s Nuh,but has relatives in Dhauj. He was a regular visitor to the village. ‘Chotta Billi’ Shahid’s father Kallu insists that Usman has stayed away ever since he filed a case with the Faridabad Sector 55 police, accusing the latter of firing a gun in front of their house during an altercation last year.

An agitated Kallu cites the incident to prove the innocence of his son,who he says is 22 years old but has already fathered two children. “How can my son be friends with Usman when we have filed a case against him?” he asks.

Records at the Faridabad Sector 55 police station, under which Dhauj falls, tell a different story. With the exception of ‘Khutkan’ Shamshad Ali,Newsline found cases pending against all the three accused. Police officers said they were in the process of compiling a complete list of the cases against the four in accordance with a Delhi Police request, and the list should be ready by Monday.

The most recent of the cases is against ‘Mobile’ Kamruddin, who is still absconding. The FIR was registered on February 4 on an attempt-to-murder charge.

Police officials say that Kamruddin was never arrested in the case, and subsequently, they had initiated legal proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender.

Kamruddin, known only as ‘Mobile’ in Dhauj,is also the fifth accused in an attempt-to-murder case, and the FIR was registered in June 2007. ‘Bada Billi’ Iqbal is the second of the eight accused in the case, while ‘Chotta Billi’ Shahid is the sixth.

Kamruddin’s mother Baskar alleged that the police had also picked up Kamruddin’s younger brother Anees the night they arrested Shamshad.

“They also picked up Haji Ummar,a neighbour of (Bada) Billi, but let him go the next day. Anees is not like Kamran; he would never pick a fight with anyone,” she said.

Shahid is an accused in two cases of cow slaughter, while Iqbal is an accused in one. Kamruddin also faces attempt-to-murder and armed robbery charges in a May 2006 case.

Shamshad was arrested from his house an hour-and-a-half past midnight on Thursday.

“He knew that the police were coming for him. All of us asked him to go away for a few days, but he kept insisting that he was not guilty and had nothing to fear. They caught him sleeping at home,” said Arif Ali,Shamshad’s younger brother.
