Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested four men in connection with an armed robbery of Rs 8 lakh that took place in the South Rohini area last week, officers said on Saturday.

The accused were identified as Bharat (22) and Hitesh (22), both residents of Mangolpuri, and Gautam (22) and Ashwani (22), who are residents of Rohini. The police recovered Rs 6.22 lakh in cash, the bag used to carry the money, and the knife allegedly used in the crime.

According to police, the robbery took place on September 28 around 12.45 pm near Jaipur Golden Hospital in Rohini’s Sector 3. The complainant, Adarsh Shrivastav, an employee of a businessman, Adib Alam, was carrying Rs 8 lakh in cash collected from one Pankaj, an employee of another firm named Pearl.

As he reached near the hospital, police said, he was intercepted by four men who brandished a knife and robbed him of the entire sum before fleeing on foot. Based on his complaint, a case was registered at South Rohini police station, and investigation was taken up immediately.

Officials said the arrests were made after police analysed more than 100 CCTV footage clips to trace the suspects’ movements.

Acting on tip-offs, the team laid a trap near Gate No. 3 of Japanese Park in Rohini, where Bharat and Hitesh were arrested on September 30. Based on their questioning, the other two accused, Ashwani and Gautam, were arrested on Friday near Mukarba Chowk, and the stolen cash was recovered from their possession.

“On September 27, Ashwani, the mastermind of this daylight armed robbery, hatched the plan to rob the victim near Jaipur Golden Hospital. He contacted his associates — Gautam, Hitesh, Bharat and another man — and it was decided that after committing the robbery, the accused would flee in different directions and meet at the DDA park near Mangolpur Kalan village. After committing the robbery, the accused met as per plan. From there, Ashwani and Gautam tried leaving for Uttarakhand before being arrested,” said DCP (Crime Branch) Pankaj Kumar.

Police said the accused are habitual drinkers and drug users who turned to crime due to unemployment and poverty.

Ashwani, who arranged the weapon, works as a housekeeping supervisor with a private company. Gautam and the others are unemployed, with police describing them as having fallen into bad company over time.

Further investigation is underway to trace other associates and verify if the group was involved in similar robberies in the past.

Police said the case was registered at South Rohini police station on September 28 under Sections 309(4) (robbery) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
