The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will construct a new Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste plant on an emergency basis following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s strict instructions to expedite the clearing of the city’s landfills.

Kejriwal reviewed the status of the Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur landfills and expressed concern over the slow pace of progress of the removal of legacy waste Thursday directing MCD officials to form an action plan on landfill management within 15 days.

While the garbage processing target for the Okhla Landfill was to be increased to 10,000 MT per day by April 1, the CM was told that the MCD was processing around 5000 to 6000 MT of waste falling short of its target due to various factors including unseasonal rain spells and the delay in the operationalization of the C&D waste plant.

“This is not the time to allow any delays. We need to plug all loopholes and immediately bring progress back on track,” Kejriwal said directing the MCD to start the C&D waste plant at the Okhla Sanitary Landfill (SLF) by April 15.

While reviewing the situation of the Bhalswa Landfill, the CM was apprised that there had been a slight delay in reaching the target of 10,000 MT owing to the rains but the target would be met in a few days with the civic body confident of reaching 8,500 MT by Friday.

The CM further expressed his concern at the situation of the Ghazipur Landfill, noting several delays at the site with officials informing him that the agency deployed on the site had been issued a show cause notice due to the shortcomings on its end and Kejriwal directing them to terminate the agency’s contract by the end of the month if it did not bring the process back on track.

Directing officials to come up with a plan for the three landfills within 15 days, the CM said, there was no need to create more legacy waste at any of the landfills and the MCD needed to give immediate attention to its landfills.
