Police suspect that a 5-year-old girl whose body was found in a water tank in Mahipalpurs E Block today had been raped. The victims naked body was discovered in a water tank at Mahipalpur on Friday afternoon. Her mother,who works as nurse at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre,had lunch with her daughter around 1.15 pm before leaving for work. Around 2.30 pm,says the family,the girl went to the terrace to hang clothes to dry. Her grandmother was also in the same house,but was resting. When she did not return after 20 minutes,her grandmother panicked and called her mother who rushed back home,and found the bucket the girl had taken on the roof of an adjacent building.
On getting to the roof they found her naked body in a water tank. The girl had come to visit her mother only two months ago. She celebrated her fifth birthday on March 14. Her father is based in Nagaland.
Police said they suspect a 20-year-old man in the locality of committing the crime. We are conducting raids to nail the accused, said a senior police officer.
