Five months after they were suspended for protesting against ragging, five elected student representatives of Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) have now been expelled — a move that has triggered protests on campus.
According to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), which has led demonstrations, the expelled students include Sharanya, the treasurer of the AUD Student Council; Shubhojeet, a council councillor; and Shefali, an SFI Delhi State Committee member. Two others, Ajay and Keerthana, have also been expelled.
Earlier, Nadia, also a State Committee member pursuing her master’s, had been served an expulsion notice.
On Monday afternoon, SFI Delhi members staged a protest outside the residence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, who also serves as the chancellor of AUD, and submitted a memorandum demanding that the expulsions be revoked.
In its statement, the SFI said, “The five of us were suspended for speaking out against an instance of ragging which had almost led to an incident of suicide of a student of AUD. The administration proceeded to take alarmingly unreasonable action against us, when we were merely seeking help from the institution to adequately redress the situation.”
The statement further said that the Delhi High Court had directed the university to conduct hearings, but alleged that the administration had “continued on its tirade of disproportionate mob justice at the whims of the Administration”.
“In the course of seeking justice, women students have had to face physical beatings, and groping at the hands of the Administration,” the statement alleged.
The SFI said a delegation comprising Delhi president Sooraj Elamon, state committee member Achintya, and expelled councillor Shubhojeet submitted the memorandum to Saxena, outlining what the group described as “all the democratic demands of students”.
When contacted, officials at the varsity said, “Pending inquiry, these students approached Hon’ble High Court and the Hon’ble Court directed the University to complete the inquiry and issue final orders to these students before September 26 following procedures…”
“Accordingly, the University, in compliance with the Hon’ble High Court order, completed the inquiry following all due process. After providing sufficient opportunities to students, the order dated September 25 was issued. The matter was to be heard by the Hon’ble High Court on September 26; the next date of hearing is November 3. The matter is subjudice and hence the university has no further comments.”
