Delhi saw a 2.5 per cent decline in the number of deaths in road crashes up to September this year compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Delhi Traffic Police.
The decline is due to the implementation of globally-tested, evidence-based road safety interventions, the police said.
The data also show a decline of around 2.9 per cent in cases of fatal road crashes in the January to September period, compared to the same period last year.
In terms of numbers, road crash deaths came down from 1,178 in the January-September period last year to 1,149 until September 2025, Delhi Police said in a statement. The number of fatal crashes declined from 1,148 to 1,115 for the same period over these two years.
Even with this improvement, the number of deaths on the roads of the capital has continued to average almost five every day this year.
“The Delhi Traffic Police have adopted a multi-pronged targeted approach from analysing road crashes, focusing on identified risk factors and recommending road infrastructure changes resulting in the decrease in road crashes and saving lives,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhry said.
The Crash Research Cell of the Delhi Traffic Police analyses road crash deaths by studying patterns and trends of crashes on the roads of the capital. The annual Delhi Road Crash Report identifies high-risk locations that are known as “black spots”. The Engineering Cell of the Traffic Police visits these locations to suggest road infrastructure upgrades, the statement said.
The Delhi Road Crash Report was earlier called the Accident Report in Delhi. The title of the report was changed in line with the worldwide practice of treating road crashes as preventable and not inevitable.
“This change has empowered the government to be more proactive in saving lives on the road through evidence-based and targeted interventions and programs. The continued reduction in road crash deaths is a direct result of targeting risk factors and recommending life-saving measures at high-risk locations. The Delhi Traffic Police remains committed to reduce road crash deaths,” Chaudhry said.
This year, the Traffic Police have identified 143 locations across the capital and recommended changes to road design, installing signages, and repairing roads for a safer and smoother commute.
This is in addition to the active participation of Delhi Traffic Police personnel in District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) meetings and complying with the guidelines of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the police said.
In the DRSC meetings, Assistant Commissioners of Police and Traffic Circle inspectors work together with other departments to recommend required changes at district-specific locations.
The Traffic Police have recommended the deployment of various speed calming measures at more than 30 identified locations near schools, colleges, and hospitals this year. This includes deploying speed breakers, making design changes at roundabouts, and enforcing pedestrian crossings.
More than 3,600 police personnel across traffic circles are sensitised and given specialised training in speed management methods through leading road safety experts. Regular training is underway to keep the Traffic Police staff updated on the latest enforcement practices along with traffic management, police said.
