Three men have been arrested for allegedly targeting ATM users at night and stealing money from their cards, police said, adding that the gang has been involved in at least eight cases of cheating across Delhi and Faridabad. The police recovered Rs 35,000 in cash, a mobile phone and a SIM card used to dupe victims, and a tube of FeviKwik, among other things from the three accused.
According to police, the gang would allegedly apply FeviKwik inside the space meant for inserting the ATM card in the machine. “When someone would come to use the ATM, their card would get stuck in the machine’s slot… One of them would stand there to note down the PIN of the ATM card and would advise the victim to call the customer care number that they have written on the wall,” said Crime Branch DCP Bhisham Singh.
“The call would be attended by a group member who would advise the victim to leave the card in the machine. He would tell them that the card would be sent to the bank’s branch automatically. When the victim would leave, they would take out the ATM card and withdraw the cash,” he explained the modus operandi.
The arrested individuals were identified as Rahul Kumar Singh (31), Gaurav Kumar (33) and Deepak Patel (31). Singh, the alleged gang leader, has a history of similar crimes dating back to 2011, said police. He was previously arrested in East Delhi’s Jagatpuri for a similar offense and has been implicated in cheating cases across Gujarat, Daman, and Uttar Pradesh.
