Facelift plan gets nod, Bijwasan station to be renamed

The department is exploring the possibility of creating direct connectivity between the airport and the Bijwasan station.

The Delhi government has begun working on a comprehensive roadmap for world-class stations after the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering Centre) (UTTIPEC), at a recent governing body meeting, gave its approval for the re-development of Anand Vihar and Bijwasan railway stations.

The department is exploring the possibility of creating direct connectivity between the Delhi airport and the Bijwasan railway station. It is also looking at a plan to ensure detailed connectivity with the villages surrounding the railway stations.

At the governing body meeting, chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung last month, re-development of the two railway stations was given the green signal.

After the redevelopment, Anand Vihar station will be equipped to handle 2.1 lakh passengers a day. For the same, the Public Works Department  has proposed an East-West corridor for smooth traffic flow.

The redevelopment of Bijwasan station has been planned in two phases with an iconic building and modern amenities. The construction will be based on the policy of mixed land use, which will include commercial and residential properties.

Meanwhile, the Railway department has agreed to rename the Bijwasan station as ‘Bijwasan-Dwarka railway station’. For both stations, sources said, the PWD will work out a detailed connectivity plan, keeping in mind traffic issues.

The Railways has been asked to prepare a plan for overbridges to connect surrounding villages. The committee has also suggested demarcating passenger drop-off and pick-up areas to prevent congestion. The stations will be developed as a public space with facilities such as small retail shops, kiosks and public conveniences.

Also in the pipeline are plans to provide pedestrian crossing along the railway tracks and night shelters in the surrounding areas.

Sources said airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) had raised the issue of having in place a garbage-collection system to avoid chances of accidents due to bird hits. The committee has directed that a second entry from the Delhi airport be worked out by the Railways, DIAL and PWD.
