An elderly person lost his life while trying to stop a man from beating his wife in Delhi’s Mukundpur on Wednesday.

The victim, Ran Singh, 60, was a neighbour of the accused Dhiraj, 42.

“On November 13, Dhiraj was beating his wife and cursing his neighbour Ran Singh. Ran Singh objected to his abuses and went to the first floor to stop Dhiraj from beating his wife and solve their dispute,” said Nidhin Valsan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North).

However, Dhiraj, enraged at the intervention by Singh, hit him on the head with an iron rod. The victim fell from the stairs of the first floor. He was rushed to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital in Jahangirpuri where the doctors declared him dead upon arrival, the police officer added.

The police said Singh’s nephew informed them about the assault. Investigation revealed that the accused, a private vehicle driver, used to have regular fights with his wife, and was physically and verbally abusive towards her.

A case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Bhalswa Dairy Police Station, and the accused has been arrested.
