The Election Commission on Thursday said it had started the process to delist 345 registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) that had not contested any election since 2019, a condition for registration.

The offices of these parties could not be located as well, the poll panel said in a statement.

“It has come to the notice of the Commission that of the over 2,800 RUPPs, currently registered with ECI, many RUPPs have failed to fulfil the essential conditions which are required to continue as an RUPP. Thus, a nationwide exercise was conducted by the ECI to identify such RUPPs and 345 such RUPPs have already been identified till now,” the EC said.

The Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states would issue show-cause notices to these parties, which will have the opportunity to be heard, it said. A final final decision will be taken after that.

Parties are registered by the EC under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which gives the parties certain privileges, including tax exemption.

“This exercise has been conducted with the aim of cleaning up the political system and delisting of such parties which have not contested any election to Lok Sabha or Legislative Assemblies of States/UTs or bye-elections since 2019 and those which could not be physically traced as well,” the EC said.

In 2022, the poll panel had carried out such a drive and had either declared inactive or delisted 537 RUPPs. Apart from the RUPPs, there are six recognised national parties and 63 recognised state parties.
