A 26-year-old resident doctor at RTR Hospital was shot in the face Monday night by men who were waiting inside his car. Police said the incident took place outside the hospital gate, in Dwarka.
The doctor, Hemant Mudgal, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. No arrest has been made so far.
Police said they received a PCR call around 9 pm. The incident took place around 50 metres from the police station.
A senior doctor at RTR hospital said, “We were standing outside the building. Hemant had just come to the hospital and was having tea at a stall. When he entered his car, a Hyundai Verna, there were two men in the backseat. He started driving and took a sharp turn, and one of the men fell on the road. The other man hit him with the pistol and forced him to stop and step out of the car. The assailants then fired at him and took the car. They rammed into a wall and the guards tried to block them off, but they broke through the gate. Hemant had a bullet injury on his jaw; we took him to the emergency department.”
“We believe they were trying to steal his car but when he resisted, they hit him. They fired many bullets to scare everyone. We tried to stop them but they had weapons. Hemant had come for the night shift when this happened,” said another doctor.
While the witnesses raised allegations of carjacking, Shankar Choudhary, DCP (Dwarka), said, “We are scanning all CCTVs inside and around the hospital to nab the accused. We don’t think it’s a case of carjacking. Multiple teams are working on the case.”
The doctor was first admitted to RTR Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital by his family. Police said they are yet to record his statement.
The Delhi Police tweeted, “An incident of firing at a resident doctor has been reported from RTR Hospital, JP Kalan. The victim is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is stable. A case under attempt to murder & Arms Act has been registered & multiple teams formed to nab the culprits.”
