Fervent campaigning,poster wars and alleged doling out of freebies seems to have made an impact,as nearly 43.62 per cent of over one lakh student voters turned up to elect this years Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). The figure was up from last years 40.5 per cent.
According to university officials,the morning colleges saw a voter turnout of 39.55 per cent,while the evening colleges fared better at around 47 per cent.
The polling took place amidst high security, with barricades being put up and entry to colleges being monitored. According to the election officer,there were two teams who monitored the polling. We have a technical team of around five members to take care of any problems with the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines). Apart from that,12 teams of two members each did rounds of colleges, Chief Election Officer Ashok Vohra said.
There were reports of minor glitches in EVMs at SGTB Khalsa College.
The voting began around 8.30 am colleges in the morning colleges,while their evening counterparts went to polls at 3 pm.
During some last-minute campaigning,students were seen telling voters the ballot numbers of their candidates.
Talking about what drove her to the polling booth,Shumneiyang Zeite,a student of Hindu College,said,The four-year programme has brought a new dimension to the elections this time.
The votes will be counted on Saturday morning in Police Lines,Kingsway Camp. Last year,on the day counting in North Campus,student activists had clashed with police.
The venue has been shifted because of security reasons, Vohra said.
Meanwhile,a showcause notice against eight candidates was issued by the election officer.
I had found printed pamphlets carrying the names of some candidates on Wednesday evening.
Taking suo motu cognizance of this,a notice had been sent to them. The candidates were expected to reply by Thursday evening, Vohra said. According to the DU election rules,candidates cannot print posters for campaigning.
