The Delhi High Court on Friday directed Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta to hold a meeting of officials of all agencies concerned on February 4 and draw up a plan to construct 144 permanent shelters for the homeless as per the Delhi Masterplan-2021.
A Division Bench comprising Justice B D Ahmed and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also directed the NGOs,which had approached the court,to give their inputs to the chief secretary for consideration and,if found relevant,to include in the plan.
The meeting would also consider conducting a survey of places where night shelters were urgently needed, the Bench said.
NGOs working in Central Delhi were also directed to ensure that homeless people staying at a temporary night shelter near the Pusa Road roundabout at present are shifted to a new one at Motia Khan.
As for the homeless evicted from Pool Mithai in North Delhi by the Railway authorities earlier this month, the Bench said they would also be accommodated at the closest community shelter available.
The Bench also asked the New Delhi Municipal Council to convert its night shelter at Gwalior Pottery in Sarojini Nagar into a family night shelter.
Earlier, the counsel of various agencies engaged in providing night shelters had informed the court that temporary shelters would be set up by March 31,and removed thereafter with the permission of the court.
The matter will now come up for hearing on February 10.
