The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday issued challans worth Rs 3.8 lakh against the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for failing to initiate mandatory anti-pollution measures at work sites along Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road. However, DMRC had denied the claims, stating that the stretch under its jurisdiction is limited, while pointing out that its work sites follow mandatory protocols.
According to the MCD, a total of 28 challans were issued to DMRC by the South and Central Zones including violations of National Green Tribunal (NGT) laws and Solid Waste Management rules.
The violations included inadequate dust suppression measures, failure to cover construction material, absence of proper barricading at work sites and lack of on-site housekeeping required to minimize dust dispersion.
Meanwhile, DMRC issued a statement pointing out that only 6.58 km of the entire MB Road falls within its jurisdiction for the construction works pertaining to the Aerocity–Tughlakabad Corridor (Line-10) under Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Project Phase-IV.
“This stretch of MB road does not have any footpath and outside the road lies an unpaved ground. DMRC work is going on in the median of the road within barricades. At a few locations, barricades are opened to facilitate vehicles and pedestrians to cross the road,” the statement read.
Further, DMRC stated that the violations flagged by the civic body have been reviewed at the site. DMRC also noted that there exists a lack of dust bins provided by the civic agencies, adding that local residents and passersby dump their debris on the road sides regularly, which it claimed was not being removed by the authority concerned.
In response to MCD’s claims, DMRC stated that measures such as regular water sprinkling on construction site, disposal of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste at C&D plants and installation and working of anti smog gun is being carried out.
