With the arrival of scorching summer, the peak electricity demand of Delhi has reached the season’s highest this year at 6,780 megawatts (MW) — within the first two weeks of the month — against 5,781 MW during the same period in 2023.
The season’s highest was recorded at around 3:26 pm on Thursday, shows State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) data.
The BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) and Tata Power, meanwhile, said that they have successfully met the peak power demand in their respective areas.
According to information shared by the discoms, this May, the peak power demand has been increasing on a daily basis compared to last year. In April 2024, Delhi’s peak power demand ranged between 3,809 MW and 5,447 MW against the 3,388 MW and 5,422 MW range in 2023. “Last month, the peak power demand was higher on 83 per cent of the corresponding days against April 2023, with a difference of up to 32 per cent. This disparity highlights the profound impact that the weather can have on a city’s power consumption patterns,” said a discom official.
The SLDC data also showed that after clocking a record power demand of 7,695 MW in 2022, Delhi’s peak power demand this year may cross the 8,000-MW mark for the first time — reaching up to 8,200 MW. In 2023, Delhi’s peak power demand was recorded at 7,438 MW.
The peak power demand in BRPL’s South and West Delhi areas — which had clocked 3,250 MW and 3,389 MW during the summer in 2023 and 2022, respectively — is expected to reach around 3,679 MW this summer. On the other hand, in BYPL’s East and Central Delhi areas, the peak power demand — which had reached 1,670 MW and 1,752 MW during the summer of 2023 and 2022, respectively — is expected to touch around 1,857 MW this year.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson of Tata Power-DDL said that they successfully met the peak power demand of 1,982 MW as of now — the season’s highest — ensuring uninterrupted power supply without any network constraint and power outage.
