During its probe into the death of a Class X student of St. Columba’s School, who died by suicide last week, police examined CCTV footage that purportedly shows a teacher — among the four accused — speaking to him during his drama class, it is learnt.
It was during the class that the boy allegedly fell, and the teacher laughed at him. Hours later, he allegedly jumped from the platform of the Rajendra Place Metro station.
A police officer said the relevant portion of CCTV footage from the drama class has been accessed, in which the boy can be seen speaking with his teacher while other students stand around. “The audio is not clear, but the teacher can be seen talking to the boy. The sequence of events is being matched with the statements of students that were recorded earlier,” the officer said.
According to a police officer, three of the four teachers named in the FIR have been called for questioning by the investigating officer (IO) in the case.
The boy’s father had alleged in the FIR that the four teachers, including the school’s principal, had caused deep mental distress to his son, pushing him to take the drastic step. “… (his) classmates told me that in the last four days, (a teacher) had threatened my son that she would call his parents and get his Transfer Certificate) done. (Another teacher) has also pushed my son,” the father had alleged in the FIR.
According to the FIR, the student had fallen during his drama class on Tuesday (November 18) and was mocked by a teacher. “(The teacher) told him that he was overacting and doing drama… After that, she said no matter how much he (the student) cried, it would not make a difference to her,” it alleged.
Police said they have also reviewed portions of CCTV footage from areas in the school where the boy’s father alleged his son was pushed by another teacher.
The FIR has been lodged under sections 107 (abetment to suicide) and 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (BNS).
During the investigation, the police had found a suicide note in the boy’s backpack in which he apologised to his family for taking his own life, saying, “What can I say, the teachers of my school are like this.”
The Delhi government’s Directorate of Education had stated that a “high-level” five-member panel would conduct a “thorough, objective and time-bound” probe into the details and circumstances surrounding the incident, and determine administrative accountability.
