A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 32-year-old man at a private speech therapy centre in Northwest Delhi.
The accused, who is a staffer at the centre, was apprehended and bound down under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on September 8, police said on Saturday.
According to the police, the incident came to light on September 6, when the mother of the girl, who has speech difficulties, made a PCR call.
“She alleged that her daughter, after returning from her speech therapy class on September 6, started behaving unusually and allegedly started imitating sexual activities… the girl allegedly indicated that one of the employees at the centre did the same to her,” an officer said.
On being questioned, the girl allegedly named a staffer at the centre and her mother informed her husband, following which a PCR call was made, police said.
According to the officer, the girl was taken to a hospital for a medical examination.
Based on the medical examination, the mother’s statement and video evidence provided by the family, a case of sexual harassment under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered on September 7.
“The mother said that the girl, even at 4 years of age, did not speak properly. The parents then met a doctor who advised them to see a special educator. From August 19, they started sending the child to the institute. She attends a 45-minute session everyday,” an officer said.
Under BNSS, an accused is “bound down” by providing a bond or bail bond, upon certain conditions imposed by an officer or court, to secure their release from custody after being accused of an offence.
