A day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) following the heavy rain during which at least five people died amid reports of waterlogging, and traffic snarls on Wednesday evening, the weather bureau declared a yellow warning (be aware) on Thursday.
The downpour brought the minimum temperature on Thursday to 24.3 degree Celsius, three notches below normal and the lowest recorded in two months. The second lowest was 24.6 degree Celsius on June 6.
While 203.7 mm of monthly rainfall was recorded in Delhi until Wednesday, the Capital received more than half of this amount at 107.6 mm in Safdarjung station, which is representative of the city, in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday.
IMD’s 24-hour cumulative rainfall data till 8.30 am Thursday shows Safdarjung logged 107.6 mm, Lodhi Road 106 mm, Ridge 113 mm, Ayanagar 71.4 mm, Palam 68.3 mm, Pusa AWS 86 mm, Mayur Vihar AWS 147.5 mm, Delhi University AWS 104.5 mm, Pitampura AWS 45.5 mm, and Najafgarh AWS 113 mm. Most of the rainfall took place after a dry day from 5.30 pm to 11.30 pm but light to moderate spells of rainfall also lasted till 2.30 am on Thursday.
Earlier, an orange alert (be prepared) was issued for Thursday but it was changed to a yellow (be aware) warning until Friday, after which there is no warning according to IMD’s seven-day forecast.
The water level in the Yamuna remains below the warning level. At 8 am on Thursday, the Old Railway Bridge recorded the water level as 202.24 metre, as per data from the Central Water Commission’s flood forecasting station. The warning mark is at 204.5 metre, while the danger level is at 205.33 metre.
Last year, the water level reached 208.66 metre, which is the highest level ever recorded since 1978, and resulted in the worst-ever floods in 45 years.
A generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thundershowers is predicted on Thursday by IMD. Over the week, the maximum temperature and minimum temperature are predicted to fall below normal at 34 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police received 127 calls about waterlogging, 2,945 for traffic jams, and 50 about tree falling as well as 27 calls for building collapse from Wednesday till 7 am on Thursday.
