Waterlogging and traffic snarls reported as Delhi receives spells of intense rain

Light rain is very likely in the National Capital Region in the next two hours, the IMD said at 1.36 pm on Monday.

Delhi received intense rain on Monday morning, resulting in waterlogging and traffic snarls in parts of the capital. As of 11.30 am, the India Meteorological Department’s Safdarjung base station had logged 2.7 mm of rain, whereas the Palam, Ridge, Delhi University and Pusa stations had recorded 31.8 mm, 37.2 mm, 37.5 mm and 35 mm of rain, respectively.

The Lodhi Road and Ayanagar weather stations recorded light rain of 2 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively, according to the IMD.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Monday and predicted a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

The IMD located the monsoon trough to be at mean sea level passing through Jaisalmer, Kota, Guna, Damoh, Pendra Road, Sambalpur, Puri and thence southeastwards to the low-pressure area over Northwest adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. The monsoon is likely to be active in Peninsular and adjoining central India during the next four-five days, according to the IMD bulletin.

In an X post, the traffic police advised the public to avoid New Rohtak Road and Anand Parbat in view of waterlogging. Waterlogging was reported also from Fateh Singh Margh but it was later cleared.

The maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung base station on Sunday was 37.1 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature on Monday was 29 degrees Celsius–both two notches above normal. The relative humidity was below normal as of 8.30 am. The minimum humidity, at 59 per cent, was 5 per cent below normal and the maximum humidity, at 75 per cent, was 3 per cent below normal.

Earlier, at 11.35 am, it predicted moderate to heavy rain accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning for South Delhi, South-East Delhi and the NCR.

There is no IMD alert for the next seven days for Delhi and a generally cloudy sky with light rain and thunderstorm is predicted for Tuesday.
