A day after the Supreme Court banned sale of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR, Delhi Police Tuesday continued to chalk out a plan to enforce it. While traders, who are looking at massive losses, approached the BJP for relief, others, including civic agencies and doctors, welcomed the move.
Delhi Police spokesperson Madhur Verma told The Indian Express that teams have been formed to crack down on sale of crackers. “We have started issuing notices to the licence holders. Public notices will be issued from Wednesday, so that citizens follow the court order,” he said.
A section of firecracker traders, meanwhile, met Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari who, in turn, promised to solve their problems caused by the “shocking order”, the BJP said. The Delhi BJP has written to Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan to help “get permission so that firecrackers can be sold for at least seven days and burnt for at least two days”.
However, the three municipal corporations — also ruled by the BJP — welcomed the verdict and said that they would raise awareness about pollution through their local representatives. Maintaining that the apex court order will be beneficial, Dr Karan Madan, assistant professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders, AIIMS, said, “Air quality deteriorates significantly with the use of firecrackers.”
The Delhi government said every Delhi resident must work towards “respecting the law for better environment”.
