Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said the Aam Aadmi Party will approach the courts to get the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections conducted, accusing the Centre of purposely delaying the same. Addressing the Assembly, he said that when the Bill to unify the MCDs was passed, the Centre had assured that a delimitation commission would be formed, following which elections will be held. But the panel was yet to be formed, he said. “They don’t want elections to be conducted. This is against democracy.”
The MCD polls, originally scheduled for April, were put off hours to go for the election schedule to be announced, after the Centre announced its plan to merge the three civic bodies in the city.
AAP claims the Centre is delaying the civic elections as it fears a loss. The party just won an Assembly bypoll in Delhi handsomely, and before that, swept the Punjab elections. AAP is expecting both the results to fuel its chances in the Capital, which has a substantial Punjabi population. Rajinder Nagar, where it won the bypoll, also has a large population from the state. More than three months after ex-Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan was granted bail by a lower court in the larger conspiracy case of Northeast Delhi riots, the Special Cell of Delhi Police has challenged the order before the Delhi High Court stating that the trial court ignored the statements of protected witnesses which “attributed specific and definite role” to her “not only in conspiracy but also in terror financing”.

She had been in custody since February 2020 and is the only UAPA accused in the case to have been granted bail by the trial court. “Photography is no longer an art, it used to be,” says Rajkumar Kapoor, owner of Madanjee & Co, a camera store in Chandni Chowk’s ‘camera market’. One of the oldest camera stores here, it was founded in Peshawar by Kapoor’s grandfather, who shifted it to Delhi after Partition and established it in Chandni Chowk in 1955. After his grandfather, the store was owned by Kapoor’s father, and now Kapoor. Like Madanjee & Co, many stores in the camera market have existed since the 1950s, and the ownership has been passed down generations. What was earlier around six stores grew to over 200 now, all packed together.

While the stores display old manual analog cameras, most of their work now deals with repairing and selling digital ones. All surviving shops have adapted with time to the technological shift in photography – from black and white film to colour to digital. A recent revival in film photography has sparked a wave of mostly young customers coming to the market, seeking to repair old cameras which belonged to their parents and grandparents. Read more

Citing a CAG report which said the Delhi government was running in profit, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the numbers were the "biggest proof of its honesty". AAP's honesty has deprived the opponents of their sleep, he said.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday said the Delhi government has had a revenue surplus from 2015-16 to 2019-20. It, however, mentioned that the Delhi government was able to maintain the revenue surplus largely because the pension liabilities of its employees were being borne by the central government and the Delhi Police's expenditure was borne by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
"This is the CAG report. It says the Delhi government is running in profit since AAP came to power. This is the biggest proof of honesty of AAP. This honesty has deprived our opponents of their sleep," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena invited suggestions from the public to improve the MCD's poor financial health and also urged people to "honestly pay" their property taxes and dues to make the civic body financially stable.
The LG said between financial years 2019-2020 and 2021-22, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) cash deficit stood at Rs 2,756.32 crore. The past financial mismanagement and non-payment of property taxes by most residents have led to the current financial crisis, Saxena said on Twitter.
