Delhi Air Quality Index (AQI) Level Today, November 8: As the temperature drops in Delhi and NCR cities, the air quality index is witnessing a spike. Delhi on Saturday recorded an AQI of 566 at 7 am, falling in the ‘hazardous’ category, according to the data on AQI.in.

Visuals from across Delhi showed the city enveloped in a thick layer of smog in the early hours of the day, with low visibility on roads and localities.

The sharp rise in air quality index is parallel with the rise in farm fires in northern states, contributing to high air pollution. This week, Punjab recorded hundreds of cases of farm fires, taking the AQI in the state to ‘severe’ in many cities.

In October, Delhi recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 223, the second-worst for October in five years. Nearly two-thirds of the month was spent breathing ‘poor’ air or worse — 11 days in the ‘poor’ category, seven in ‘very poor,’ and none in the ‘good’ category.

According to AQI.in, breathing in Delhi air is as harmful as smoking 9.6 cigarettes a day.

Meanwhile, the AQI in Noida was recorded over 700 at 7 am, in the hazardous category. In Gurugram, the AQI settles at 401.

Experts have advised residents to avoid outdoor exercise or commuting during peak pollution hours, use N95 masks when outside, and run air purifiers indoors to minimise exposure to fine particulate matter.

The AQI scale classifies air quality as: Good (0–50), Satisfactory (51–100), Moderately Polluted (101–200), Poor (201–300), Very Poor (301–400), and Severe (401–500). Higher AQI readings indicate increasingly unhealthy air.
