A burglar who faked his death to evade arrest was caught by a Delhi Police Crime Branch team in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Saturday
The police identified the accused as Virender Vimal, 42, a resident of Delhi’s Mungeshpur. Vimal was wanted in four FIRs registered at Bawana police station in 2020. These included night-time burglaries at industrial and residential premises, and possession of a stolen vehicle and an illegal firearm, the police said.
To dodge the non-bailable warrants (NBWs) issued in four criminal cases of house thefts and burglaries, Vimal allegedly submitted a forged Municipal Corporation of Delhi death certificate in court.
As per the document, Vimal had died on August 24, 2021, and this led to the abatement of several ongoing criminal proceedings, Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime, said.
“After faking his death, he managed to remain off the radar for over three years,” a police official said.
However, following inconsistencies in records and renewed scrutiny by a team of the Inter State Cell (ISC) of the Crime Branch, suspicions arose about the authenticity of the document.
A fresh investigation led by Police Inspector Satyender Poonia, under the close supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramesh Lamba, and it was found that he had submitted fake proof of his death.
The arrest was made after sustained surveillance and technical intelligence gathering. “His identity was digitally verified using the Crime Kundli application and Facial Recognition System, which matched his current photograph with his past police records,” DCP Gautam said.
Vimal was arrested under Section 35(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and produced before the court.
