Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena visited the Najafgarh lake Saturday to inspect and review ongoing works.

Saxena, who is also the chairman of the High-Level Committee (HLC) set up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to revive the Yamuna river to which the lake is connected, visited the region along with a team of senior officers from Delhi and Haryana governments. Pollution in the river is caused by sources originating from Delhi as well as Haryana.

He reviewed the concerted efforts made by both Delhi and Haryana to rejuvenate the Yamuna. Expressing satisfaction at the works carried out so far, the L-G also set deadlines for micro-level works in the project as International Environment Day approached, said officials.

“During the visit, it was found that much work has been done and some were in progress as far as the polluting drains are concerned. Out of the three drains, L1, L2 and L3, which were polluting the Najafgarh jheel from Gurgaon, the L1 drain has been trapped, reducing the flow of the polluting elements to the lake and the outflowing Najafgarh drain, ” L-G House officials said in a statement.

Officials said that earlier it was pointed out that in Najafgarh drain, which accounted for about 70 per cent of the pollution in the Yamuna, 40 per cent of the mostly untreated discharge came from L1, L2 and L3 drains flowing out of Gurgaon. Also, a huge amount of industrial effluent from Haryana was directed towards Najafgarh drain.

After observing that work on trapping/cleaning discharge from the L2 and L3 drains are underway, the L-G asked the officials to speed up the work. He also visited eight sites to review the work.

Saxena asked senior officers of both states to recognise the work done by the labourers on the site. “They are working hard and they should be appreciated and rewarded for their hard work,” he said.
