Expressing “serious” concern over the Delhi government’s “neglect” towards the Punjabi language, Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, the L-G office said on Tuesday.
According to a press note shared by the L-G office, 752 posts of Punjabi-trained graduate teachers and four posts of postgraduate teachers are lying vacant in schools run by the Delhi government. It further said the Punjabi Academy of the government that works for pthe romotion of the language could spend only Rs 19.99 crore against Rs 27.28 crore allocated to it during the financial year 2023-24.
There has been a reduction of 17% in the budget allocation for the Punjabi Academy in the current fiscal, it said, adding that a large number of positions of Punjabi teachers in MCD schools are also vacant.
Officials in the Delhi government, meanwhile, said in a statement that the matter falls under the services department, which comes under the L-G Office.
The LG, meanwhile, has underlined many “shortcomings” and asked for a thorough re-examination while disposing of a file related to a status report submitted by the Punjabi Academy on the condition of the language, said the note.
The status report was put up by the academy, which comes under the Art, Culture and Language Department of the Delhi government, following a meeting of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) with the L-G.
“Observing that the report submitted by the department is incomplete, inconclusive, and does not reflect the whole picture with respect to the concerns raised by DSGMC, Saxena has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, directing the chief secretary to examine the issue with all stakeholders,” the note said.
