Following the delay in the Census 2021 due to the pandemic, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, on Tuesday approved an extension of the date to freeze the boundaries of administrative units in Delhi up to June 30, 2024.
Saxena approved a proposal from the Revenue Department in this regard along with directions to the departments and agencies concerned to give effect to the changes in administrative boundaries, if any, by June 30, 2024.
According to L-G House officials, the Office of the Registrar General (ORGI) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, in September 2019, had requested the then chief secretary of Delhi to freeze the boundaries of the administrative units for the ensuing Census 2021 with effect from December 31, 2019.
But due to the pandemic, officials said, the Census 2021 was delayed, leading to an extension of the deadline to freeze the boundaries of administrative units. The last extension – up to January 1, 2024 – was approved in August 2023.
As per the Census rules, state governments and Union Territory administrations are to freeze the administrative boundaries of districts, tehsils, towns, etc. from the date to be intimated by the Census Commissioner. This date shall not be earlier than a year from the census reference date and till the completion of the census, officials added.
