Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj Tuesday inaugurated two new mohalla clinics in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar, taking the total number of clinics to 545.
After visiting the clinics, inspecting the facilities available for patients, and speaking to doctors, the minister said: “We started building mohalla clinics in 2015-16 with the aim of providing treatment for minor illnesses like fever, cough, and cold.”
Bharadwaj said if a person working at the coal market in Zakhira — many of whom are vendors or labourers — falls ill, they are forced to go to hospitals and wait in queues. Their entire day is wasted, affecting their income. “So, we thought of opening a ‘small-scale hospital’ in the form of mohalla clinics in every colony and ward of Delhi,” he said.
He added that the first clinic was built in the slums of West Delhi’s Pitampura. “The people living around this clinic were very happy because they would come here and get free treatment for minor illnesses,” he said.
Bharadwaj also accused “some people” of conspiring against the people of Delhi and trying to hinder the government’s work. “But we will not let any work stop”.
He announced that more mahila mohalla clinics will be opened where all employees and doctors will be women, keeping their needs in mind. There are currently around 10 such clinics in the city.
In the last few years, more than 2 crore people have received treatment at mohalla clinics, he added.
