Come November 1, you need not lose at least Rs 10 lakh in a cyber fraud to get an e-FIR lodged by the Delhi Police, Rs 1 lakh might just be enough. Also, victims will be able file such complaints at any police station in the Capital.
The Delhi Police on Thursday said that from November 1, any complaint related to cyber financial frauds, involving Rs 1 lakh or more, will mandate registration of an e-FIR, which at present is lodged only if the fraud involves Rs 10 lakh or more.
Also, complainants won’t have to dial National Cyber Helpline 1930 to register complaints. Each police station will have an integrated helpdesk to ensure that the case is registered on the cyber crime portal.
Earlier, people could only report cyber frauds amounting to Rs 10 lakh or above or file complaints through the National Cyber Helpline 1930 or the government portal cybercrime.gov.in.
“From November 1, complainant can visit any police station, where staff at Integrated Help Desk will register his/her complaint and e-FIR in case if amount is more than Rs 1 lakh, immediately. All these e-FIR will be investigated at par with regular FIR in their respective jurisdictional cyber police stations, Crime Branch and IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations),” the Delhi Police said in a statement.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said, “Complainants who have lost Rs 1 lakh or more can call 1930… the person who receives the call will register the complaint on the portal, which will automatically be converted into an e-FIR.”
“We have a total 225 police stations in the Capital. Every police station will have a helpdesk. Hence, we will have extra manpower to redress cyber related problems at the earliest,” he added.
Srivastava further said that assistance is being taken from I4C (Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre) under MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) for this initiative.
“Cyber frauds ranging from Rs 1 lakh to 25 lakh will be handled by concerned police stations. Complaints of frauds involving Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh will be handled by the Crime Branch and if the amount exceeds over Rs 50 lakh, the cases will be handled by the IFSO,” he added.
Joint Commissioner of Police (IFSO) Rajneesh Gupta said that on an average, about 300 cyber fraud complaints are registered every day.
