Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav, along with 55 party workers, was detained by police in Southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh area on Tuesday while protesting against alleged “vote theft.”
According to the police, the workers were marching towards Jawahar Chowk without prior permission for the protest. They were taken to the Najafgarh police station and later released, police added.
In a statement, the Delhi Congress alleged that the workers were detained “at the behest of the BJP” during a signature campaign against alleged manipulation of voter rolls. “We are the ‘Babbar Sher’ of Shri Rahul Gandhi and will not be afraid of the police,” said Yadav.
He accused the BJP of “misusing government machinery and police” to suppress the campaign after Rahul Gandhi exposed the ruling party’s “vote chori” in two Assembly segments.
“The BJP is rattled by the success of our campaign and the support of the people,” Yadav said, adding that “vote theft is a direct attack on the Constitution and democracy.”
Hitting out at the BJP, Yadav said, “The autocratic and arrogant BJP government cannot suppress our voice against the theft of the constitutional right to vote.”
Apart from Yadav, other Congress leaders detained included district presidents Sukhbir Sharma and Sidharth Rao, along with several block and mandal-level office bearers.
The Delhi Congress on Tuesday also held signature campaigns against “vote theft” in Patparganj, Badarpur, and Chandni Chowk districts. Former MLA Asif Mohammed Khan and municipal councillor Ariba Khan were among the prominent leaders who participated in the drives.
The BJP is yet to comment on the detention of the Delhi Congress leaders.
