Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday, May 11, hailed the ‘landmark judgement’ of the Supreme Court, which unanimously ruled in favour of the Delhi government on the issue of who controls the bureaucracy in the National Capital.
Following the verdict, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National convener Arvind Kejriwal said that the Supreme Court’s ruling marked the victory of democracy. “Heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for doing justice to the people of Delhi. With this decision, the pace of development of Delhi will increase manifold,” Kejriwal wrote.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha said the Apex Court’s verdict sent a “stern message”. “Hon’ble Supreme Court’s landmark judgement sends a stern message that officers working with Govt of Delhi are meant to serve people of Delhi through the elected government & not unelected usurpers parachuted by Centre to stall governance, namely LG,” he tweeted.
Pronouncing its verdict in the dispute between the Centre and the Delhi government over matters pertaining to control over the transfers and overall functioning of administrative services in of Delhi, the Supreme Court said: “Article 239AA establishes legislative assembly for NCTD. Members of the legislative assembly are elected by Delhi electorate. Art 239A must be interpreted so as to further the representative democracy.”
Meanwhile, Jasmine Shah, Vice Chairperson of the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi also welcomed the SC judgement by saying that it is “a victory not just for AAP govt but for everyone who believes in democracy” and a “defeat for the dictatorial actions of the BJP”.
Welcoming the verdict, AAP leader Atishi said she was “missing Manish ji on this momentous day”, referring to former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was arrested earlier this year in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case. “After years of fighting, the Supreme Court ArvindKejriwal has given the government its due,” she tweeted in Hindi. “Now no one will be able to obstruct the work of the people of Delhi. This historic decision is the victory of the people of Delhi.”
Reacting to the judgment, AAP Delhi convener and MLA Gopal Rai said, “The SC verdict is not just a win for the people of Delhi, but also a slap in the face of the Centre and PM Narendra Modi for the way that they have been unconstitutionally usurping the power of elected governments across the country.”
“In Delhi, the SC verdict of 2018 was disregarded by PM Modi through the MHA and L-G unconstitutionally and powers granted to the elected government were usurped. Officials were threatened and work was stopped,” he added.
Services Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “A nine-year-long fight of the Delhi government, which started in 2014 with CM Arvind Kejriwal at the forefront, has finally been won today. The one thing that has been established is that in the country there is one institution that has stood firm in the face of attempts to veer from Constitutional provisions. That institution is the Apex court.”
“The right that was snatched from the Delhi government has been restored today,” Bharadwaj added.
Meanwhile, Delhi NSUI President Kunal Sherawat said, “When mann ki baat and other unwanted programmes are forced on students then is it not a matter of security even Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a frequent visitor to meet and to eat with Ramjas College’s students.“
NSUI National Secretary Lokesh Chugh said, “Any outsider can visit hostel pg mens to have lunch, moreover Rahul ji was an alumni of the university and also was called upon by the students of hostel.”
He added, “If the university won’t take the notice back we will have to reach the roads as the university doesn’t belong to BJP and its machinery only. Today, the SC verdict has shown a light to disabuse the PM and BJP of the notion that they can demolish democracy using power and money.”
