Moments before a 40-year-old bakery owner was found dead at his house in Model Town Tuesday in a suspected case of suicide, he allegedly recorded a video accusing his wife and in-laws of harassment and blamed them for taking the extreme step.

In the 59-minute purported video, Puneet Khurana could be heard claiming that torture by his wife and in-laws is driving him to suicide. The couple was undergoing divorce proceedings.

“I am about to commit suicide because I am extremely tortured by my in-laws and my wife. We mutually agreed to file for divorce. We agreed to fulfill the terms and conditions, which were mutually agreed upon. But now my wife and in-laws are pressuring me for a new set of conditions. They are asking for Rs 10 lakh more,” he is heard saying.

Police, however, said forensic teams are investigating the video and more information would be available after the post-mortem report is out.

DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh said Khurana’s wife and in-laws, as well as his family members, have been questioned. “Both sides are claiming they were harassed by the other party. No FIR has been registered as of now. Further investigation is underway,” he added.

Police said they received a call at 4.18 pm on Tuesday from Khurana’s uncle, who said that his nephew had died by suicide.

Police said the couple got married in 2016 and co-owned a cafe named Woodbox Cafe, which shut down. They again opened a bakery, God’s Cake, as co-owners. The cafe and the bakery were a major bone of contention in their divorce negotiations.

Khurana’s family, the police added, had accused his in-laws of harassment during divorce proceedings.

Meanwhile, the police have said they have accessed a 15-minute audio clip of a heated exchange allegedly between the couple over money and the bakery. Khurana’s family claimed the conversation took place at 3 am on December 31. The police had said the clip had been sent for verification.
